Report on Jon Hammond’s visit to Cambodia

I had the opportunity to visit the FCIC clinic in late March.

The clinic was very busy with approximately 40 children being seen daily, of which 4 or 5 were new babies, referred from different surgical providers in Phnom Penh.

Drs Sythan and  Chern  Chern  and their dental team were doing an excellent job managing the care of new born’s being provided with NAM( naso-alveolar moulding, part of the preparation for surgery to repair cleft lip) and  the older children needing either routine  dental  or orthodontic care.

Dr Sophean  has recently joined the us to ensure that all babies and children have a thorough medical examination to exclude any other non-cleft anomalies and to monitor growth and development and assist with feeding advice.  (Thank you Dr Annie Chen-Green for this help from One-2-One.)

Before leaving,  I had an opportunity to visit Hannah at All Ears, who have been kindly providing hearing tests and treatment where necessary  for all our children.  Finally I meet with Dr Theavy, of Operation Smile, to discuss establishing a combined multidisciplinary clinic to facilitate collaborative working in the areas of alveolar bone grafting and orthognathic surgery.
